Little Bites: 1st References of "kingdom", "king"

June 4, 2017

Introducing: "Little Bites."

"LITTLE BITES" will be quick little insights that I've found in Scripture that I'd like to share with you.

Did you know that the first time the Hebrew word for "kingdom" מַמְלָכָה mam·lä·kä' appears, it is about Nimrod, the evil king?

Beresheet/Genesis 10:6-12

The sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan. The sons of Cush were Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. Now Cush became the father of Nimrod; he became a mighty one on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before YHVH; therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before YHVH." The beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. From that land he went forth into Assyria, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city."

And, the first time the Hebrew word for "king" מֶלֶךְ, meh'-lek appears, it's about human kings:

Beresheet/Genesis 14:1-4

"And it came about in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). All these came as allies to the valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea). Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but the thirteenth year they rebelled."

So the first references are about human kings and their kingdoms and cities. But God is the True King: Yeshayahu/Isaiah 43:15, "I am YHVH, your Holy One, The Creator of Israel, your King."
